 | | | | | | Welcome to the Sixth Grade | | Dear Families Thursday,
We would like to welcome you to a new school year at Benjamin E. Mays International Magnet. We our honored to have your children in our 6th grade classroom.
Focus on Student Learning
Our
first priority is to provide your child with a safe and healthy
learning environment. Our second priority is to make sure your child
learns. If we teach fractions and your child does not understand them,
then we will try a different approach. Teaching is not effective until
learning takes place.
Open Communication
At the end of every week we will send home a progress report. The report
will assess your child's academic and social performance for the week.
Please read, discuss, and sign the report and return it. We like
to involve the parents as much as possible throughout the school year. We will be very honest, open, and respectful, especially as it
relates to your child's strengths and weaknesses. We will always tell
you the truth. We prefer to focus on the positive and will attempt to
make phone calls or send e-mails whenever your child shines.
Student, Teacher, and Parent Accountability
We
will be holding your child accountable for getting their work done
and coming to class prepared every day. In sixth grade we set student
expectations very high. We set expectations for ourselves even higher. We can not expect student
achievement to rise without providing the tools and teaching the skills
they will need to succeed. Our task will be to inspire your child to ask questions and seek
answers. We will give them every opportunity to develop into a life long
learner. Our hope is that, as a parent, you believe your child can
succeed at a high level. Together we can make that a reality.
Thank you,
Bruce Goodwin and Bob Umhoefer
