Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Will my child have instruction in all of the subject areas?

A. Yes. Students receive instruction in the areas of reading, literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, art, music, and physical education, and health. These subject areas form the foundation of our school program.

Q. What does a focus on Communication Arts and Leadership mean for my child?

A. Our focus on Communication Arts and Leadership goes above and beyond basic skills instruction. We strive to involve students in activities that encourage student fluency in reading, writing, listening, thinking, speaking, and information retrieval and use. Leadership education requires students to learn personal and leadership development skills, communication skills associated with leadership, and to participate in community service activities.

Q. What about technology? Will my child have regular access to computers?

A. Benjamin E. Mays is equipped with up-to-date computer technology. We have a computer lab; multiple computers in each classroom; internet instruction and access; televisions and telephones in each classroom; and a television studio for studio production instruction and activities. Each student has regular access to these instructional resources.

Q. Are achievement tests given in math and reading if the school's focus is Communication Arts and Leadership?

A. Yes. Benjamin E. Mays Magnet School administers the district-required SAT10 achievement tests, which document all students' reading and math performance levels as well as achievement in other curricular areas.

A. Yes. There are programs and resources that can meet the needs of all students at every level of the achievement spectrum. There is a program for the gifted and talented as well as support programs for students needing additional instructional support.
